Artist: Chen Linggang
Artist's reflection: A grid of knowledge could describe this contemporary art by Chen. And color is an obvious differentiator between this and other works in the series. Character and color selection might provide a better understanding of this painting.
Chen Linggang's works are composed of small squares. They are very similar in appearance, but in fact they are different. They can be everyone, every building, every city, every second, every day, every year; or a piece of paper, a book, or a piece of history. They repeat, being independent from each other as a whole, and yet the whole is another individual as a whole, and they are mutually dominant and infinitely extended.
In his two series of works, "Reading" and "Inheritance", Chen applies two of the most basic elements of Chinese traditional ink painting - paper and ink, but he expresses his spiritual understanding of Chinese ink in a way different from other ink painting.
In the "Reading" series, ink is dissolved, only leaving behind combinations of papers. In this wordless reading, just like all the unsolved mysteries created in history, the final expression is only symbolic, and the interpretation of meaning opens up the space for the spiritual imagination of anyone.
