Books + Coffee + Contemporary Art

Updated: Apr 11, 2021

UPDATE: It seems so long ago since we were able to spend time sitting down in a restaurant, café or bookstore, to enjoy the food, atmosphere and company of friends. Sometimes we forget how important it is to get out of the home and office to go to different places and meet with others. These activities, foods and opportunities to directly interact with other people impact everyone. Perhaps more than ever before in our lifetime, we are reminded of the importance of others and other "things". And perhaps in the past when we saw a painting in person we ignored it or gave it just a glace, because, of course, we could always see it up close next time. Little did we know what was soon to come. So, the next time you see some art in a museum, a café or in person, take a good look, enjoy it for what it is for as long as you can.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE: There are many bookstores in Beijing, China that offer coffee and other drinks. And when a bookstore just sells beverages and books, it’s more akin to a library. They’re a good place to study and relax. Yet, more and more these stores are using art to enhance their appeal to customers by designating areas for the appreciation and purchase of artwork such as contemporary and modern paintings.

Although this kind of bookstore does not intend to sell art as a main business, displaying and selling it elevates a store’s atmosphere and gives it a distinctive feel. Displaying paintings that are abstract, figurative, impressionist, expressionist, photo realistic or landscape, for example, can also attract more customers to pay attention to art and increase revenue either through the purchase of the paintings or sales of food and drink.

Below are some pictures from a bookstore with a café near the Beijing Olympic Village. Dining at the bookstore / café isn’t expensive, with most prices ranging from RMB 12 - 20. Paintings from different contemporary and modern artists are displayed throughout.

So, if you’re in Beijing or any other city in China, be sure to look around for the bookstores / cafés that not only sell books, food and drink, but also display and sell art. You can grab a bite, read a book and appreciate some art from a Chinese perspective. You might even be surprised by what you find. And, who knows, maybe you’ll find artwork to add to your collection!
